1BadBird's tire post brings up something I've been thinking about for a while now.

I want a different tire and wheel combo for my car. I just dont know what.

First.. Let me say this. I do not like the black steel wheel, red line tire and chrome lug nut A12 look. It looks OK on some cars, but with the color (Q5 turquoise) it would look awful... like someone stole the hubcaps. I've been fending off the "why don't you have the OE wheels on it?" for years now.. so it doesn't bother me. I also don't care for Cragar SS wheels.

The current combo is Keystone wheels with Goodrich Radial T/A 275/60-15 on the back and 235/70-15 on the front. 8" and 7" wide wheels. The rears don't have the right back spacing and the tire scrubs on the outer wheel house when there's someone in the back seat... they were ordered for a Corvette and never picked up. They sat in the local speed shop for at least a year before I bought them for next to nothing. The wheels have been on the car since 1981 and are showing their age and the tires are old enough to vote.

I was thinking of some American Torq Thrust wheels (which I understand are ironically made in China) but I don't know. I did see these: http://www.vintagewheelworks.com/products/wheels/v40 and these http://www.vintagewheelworks.com/products/wheels/v45 both similar, but different spoke shape.

I was also thinking of losing the "big and little" look and going with some big tires all the way around. I think a 255/60-15 would fit... or maybe even (ready for this) a 16" tire and wheel in approx the same diameter and width. It would show just a little more wheel, but still have the traditional big tire sidewall look... just toned down a little.

Any thoughts?
JOHN...WAS LOOKING HERE AT YOUR FRONT TIRES 235/70-15...was that really close on the front of the fender when you turn??

Okay, much as I hate to, I have to drag this thread back on track for a brief moment...

Getting ready to order a set of wheels for Bambi. In my neverending quest to stuff the wheelhouses with rubber I'd like to see just what I can squeeze in there without creating an interference issue. Has anyone ever used one of these tools to measure for tire fitment? Thoughts, suggestions, opinions...?

Looks a little pricey for a couple pieces of plastic...but if it works I'm game...

Yea, that looks like it should be about 1/2 that price. Its a cool idea though.

Well, this process came to an abrupt halt so I don't have to worry about buying the tire fitment tool. I got on the phone yesterday with Halibrand to discuss width and backspacing. Turns out that they're not able to offer the 9" or 10" widths (the 10" versions will eventually be available) contrary to the info out there...so my quest to stuff something wider than 8" under the rear stalled. I'm committed to using the Halibrand 5 spokes so I just went ahead and ordered the wheels. I ordered a set of 15" X 7" for the front and 15" X 8" for the rear with 4" and 4.250" backspacing respectively. They have the wheels in stock and just have to drill the bolt pattern and machine the backside for correct backspacing - they said that they'll ship in 7-10 days. Interestingly, I ended up on phone with the President of the company. He was stoked when he found out that these were going on an original A12 RR and asked me to provide photos when it's completed so that they can use them for advertising. That would be pretty cool. I think I blew his mind however when I told him that I needed 10 left-hand threaded lugnuts.

LOL, my left rear wheel still has left hand lugs... just that wheel

Mine too. I didn't replace them when I replaced the front rotors so only that wheel has left hand threads. I'll get around to having new ones put in one of these days...

Did any Road Runners come with these wheels with a chrome trim ring, either standard or as an option ?

What about late '69? I got a set with my '69 I just bought and I kinda like how they look but if I'm not going to have "correct" wheels I'm going to go with something a little more flashy.

They were a 70 and up wheel. I like them too.

If you want something different and want to stay OEM, maybe one of those 15" "recall" wheels might work for you.

well we pretty much go with "It's your car, your $$, do it to make you happy" I had a Pistol Grip in my last two cars. I will again. and one of those big orange oval air cleaners. (just no huge wheels tiny tires Pa Lease!!) I like the Rallyes, no matter what year. One of e problems with these cars is so many different wheels and colors look good on them.
