Gas Tank Sending unit/Float

Ok took the sending unit out of the tank and hooked it up out of the tank and a ground and when I lifted the float the gas gage at the dash went up, so that tells me two things the dash gage works and the sending unit is working. Now I put the sending unit into a full bucket of gas and the float did not float. Dam can you replace the float. and it work freely so it is not stuck or just get a new sending unit.

Replace the float

Take the float off (assuming it's a brass float). It should be pretty light. Shake it to see if there's gas in it.

The only way the brass float would sink is if it had a leak in it. I soldered a pin hole up once in my younger, more foolish days, but I don't think I would do that again.

The float itself should be relatively inexpensive.

You got the Hemi 440 6bbl sending unit that uses a vapor separator and return line, just plug it. If you ever get vapor lock this can be utilized

You will notice the original was a 5/16 pickup and the new one is 3/8 also.

Hi Bob since my gas gauge isn't working nor is the instrument lights or the bulbs on the back of the instrument board, do I connect a ground to one leg of gas gauge and the other to the dash frame

Tooo many issues, have you pulled the round plug off the back of the instrument cluster and tested for voltage for lights and continuity for gauges there yet? You will need a diagram.

The amp meter works fine and the water temp but no indicators

I have checked the wires in the plug the wire for the gas gauge is not hot but the instrument wire is can't get to the orange wire cause my hand is to big and it's on top of plug so what do I do

if you ground the gas gauge it will always read empty. the sending unit provides the ground and the variable resistance you get when the float moves up and down relates to the movement on the gauge. so no, do not ground the one terminal on the gauge.

I just got done with the same issues as you have. Yeah hands to big so I pulled the IP cluster and found the pins loose for the round plug. Got a new board with the solid state Voltage Regulator and all is good now. Hookup the plug to the cluster as you are snaking back in,no way I could get it on once installed. Hope this helps.
