PennGrade 1 SAE 10W-40 partial synthetic in all of my old cars currently. Just buy it by the case from Amazon.

Whatever brand you decide on, I'd use the least viscous oil you can that provides adequate oil pressure. Unless your engine bearings are shot, I'd start with a 0W, 5W, 10W-30 already formulated with higher zinc. Avoid the backyard home brew game with aftermarket additives. There are many good options out there for the above.

I have used this oil for many years and I change the oil every year before storage. I try to get 1000mi per year but don't always make it. The weather in Alberta Canada is not the same as CA USA. The oil is specially formulated for flat lifter engines and contains primary ZDDP, and secondary ZDDP (which activates at lower temperatures, ie: upon start up when the worst wear can occur).

This is from Camoil.

Good Morning Cal, Collector Automobile Motor Oil (CAMOil) is rated to American petroleum Institute (API) standard, "SF", meaning that it contains 1600PPM of ZDDP. It is one of very few oils on the shelf that not only has the API logo, but has certified, printed in the container as well. The certification means that it has been tested by the API and meets the rating and standard for SF oil. Please feel free to contact me here or by phone 1-403-828-7168 if you have any questions or concerns. Thank you for your interest in CAMOil.

Whatever your choice make sure oil meets some API standard and is designed for flat lifter engines.

Just curious what Oil all you Bird Bros. are using in your RRs?
In the interest of full disclosure, I'm the president of Chart Distribution Group in St. Louis, MO which is a bulk oil distribution company. I heartily agree on the need for API spec product. I also am a big fan of starting and warming the engine to get all contaminants fully into suspension before draining the oil. Otherwise, whatever has settled to the bottom of the pan is there waiting to contaminate the new oil.

Nice, use 5-50wt synthetic these days 9qts, but back then- think it was 10-30wt Quaker State. Only 5 quarts or something like that for 383 wedge. Synthetic not yet invented......
