    Looking for a 440

If anyone hears of a good 440 block or complete (running or non-seized) 440 engine pre-1972 in the AR, MS, TN area, let me know. I'm looking to just replace the 383 I have with a 440.

    Hey Confederate...

I feel honored to have a post directed towards me. :jester: I think it goes without saying that if I had started with that chunk of ferro-oxide, I would not even bother with taking it apart. I'd just be looking for a new engine. I pity the fool that throws down money for that coral reef...

    Pistons coming out very difficultly

Far as I could tell (being no expert), the oil looked just fine coming out. Memphis is humid as hell year-round and condensation doesn't surprise me at all. Will my wood+hammer+banging method do any damage? I've seen this done before even by professionals, but does this have any risks? I...

    And here is piston #8.

    Pistons coming out very difficultly

Since the crank won't budge, I'm having to tackle the pistons that are already at BDC so I can get to the rod bolts. So I have started with pistons # 7 and 8. Eight came out after about an hour of moderate rapping with a hammer and a piece of wood on the bottom of the piston. Seven has been...

Oil pump has how many bolts connecting it?

I have taken out the four (?) main bolts that hold the oil pump to the block, but I still can't get the thing off. There are two smaller bolts on the oil pump, but they just appear to connect two parts of the pump together. Does this have to come off first? Or is mine just super stuck (like...

Timing cover and oil pan come off

I'll have to write that dude who wrote "How to rebulid big block Mopars" and ask him why they printed that 383's didn't come with windage trays. I was seriously like "wow, someone musta stuck this here!" when I discovered my 383 has one.

Timing cover and oil pan come off

I was referring to the pick up tube there in the pics. It's slippery with oil and is stuck right where it is. As far as the oil pump, I may end up replacing that anyway. But I wanted to try to get the filter off anyway, just in case there's some odd reason I can't get a new one or whatever.

Timing cover and oil pan come off

Thanks for the oil filter idea, fellahs. It's a very good idea which I will try.

Timing cover and oil pan come off

Also... as you can see in the first pic, the stupid oil filter refuses to come off. :brickwall: Are there any tricks to getting this thing off?

Timing cover and oil pan come off

I got the timing cover off. The chain was very loose and doesn't look like it had ever been replaced as far as I could tell. The bottom gear is stuck on the crank. :toetap: I think I remember seeing a timing gear remover at Autozone... Then I got the oil pan off and discovered that someone...

    Cam numbers and bore numbers

Two topics with this post - anyone know where I can look up cam lift/duration numbers for the stock cam that goes in the 383? Secondly, is there a bore calculation to find out how much displacement you get when you bore an engine over? What would my 383 be if I have to bore it .30 over? And...

    Harmonic Balancer Removal

I finally got it to come off today. I let it sit with PB blaster all night long. Then when I got home from the mines today, I got a cheat pipe and starting beatin on the thing and finally the balancer started moving. It was a b***h the whole way off the crank shaft. It never loosened up even...

    Harmonic Balancer Removal

I feel like I'm about to break all my tools. Even with the puller, it's not budging. :brickwall: Is it possible that the harmonic balancer has been heated too hot in all the possible pounding it took before it got to me and is squeezing the crankshaft?

    Harmonic Balancer Removal

Apparently, the pistons are not the only things that are seized on my 383. I have been scratching my head over the harmonic balancer all afternoon. How exactly is the balancer supposed to come off in an ideal situation? After the pulley bolts are removed and the main 1-1/4 bolt is removed, is...

    383 Stroker Kit

Yea, I lead a life of work till you drop cycles of sometimes up to 10 days in a row with a day off before another shift of several days in a row. And you thought insurance companies were only evil to their customers! :bs: This is why my RR is taking so long to tackle. I never really...

    Where is your Bird from?

Mine is a Lynch Rd car. It was sold at a dealership in Louisiana to my knowledge. The first owner was the father of a friend of my dad. The guy sold it to his son in 1976, who then turned around and sold it to my dad a few months later for $300.

    383 Stroker Kit

Let's say I set the 383 in the corner. Where does one buy a 440? I've always heard they are a very hard find.

    383 Stroker Kit

I'm just curious about options right now, even one's that seem a bit far out or that are out of my budget. I don't know much about this sort of stuff, which is why I ask, not that I would actually do it. But maybe I would. :) To answer yall's question about use, I'm just looking for a car...
