I thought the same thing, but when I tried to reroute it, what Russ said rings true. It's just too stiff to go over it and then bend back down to plug in at a 90° angle. If you try to reroute it, you'll see what I mean. It'll only fit one way and that is under the reverse rod.
Do the oil pump rotors need to be packed with vaseline to create the initial prime? Never had to install a new pump, but I seem to recall hearing that once.
