One thing to check, I was helping my buddy put his trans in his 67 Dart, trans wouldn't go like your saying, got to checking things and the clutch disc had the wrong cut onto the spline, had to pull the disc back out, we had just assumed it was right one

What master cylinder do you have on the car now? Did it come with disc oringally ?
