I am assuming that this piece is original, but why would Chrysler put it here. Is it something that is GTX only and if so, my rear panels do not have this, it is only on the front doors. It seems to have been spray dyed gold go to with the interior color scheme. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I don't think that is factory. I have never seen anything like this on any other Road Runner or GTX.

It seems like it can easily fall out, especially if you pull or play with it. Could be why. They probably fell out and people just tossed them. :confusion:

In my humble opinion, it looks to be an aftermarket trim (similar to body side mouldings and other exterior vinyl/plastic chrome trims that were popular in the early 70's. If you like the way it looks, disassemble the door panel, and try some 3-M spray adhesive on the backside of the vinyl stripe. You can use the factory chrome piece to keep it in place. It has been a few years since I reconditioned the original front door panels on my Road Runner; but I have never seen anything like the gold trim on any other GTX or 'Runner around here.:suspicion:

The question is why would they put that trim there for an after market thing? Honestly, it resembles the welting that gets sewn into the seat covers where the edges of the seat would be only thicker and has a hollow core to it. If it were me, I would not put them back in there, BUT, if they are supposed to be there from the factory then I want to put them back in place.

I don't believe that is a factory piece. At least I've never seen it.

I have never seen that before, only theory I have is maybe the owner tucked it up there as a bizarre attempt to help keep the woodgrain contact paper from wrinkling maybe they are repo doorpanels and the old ones wrinkled or he saw other cars like that. Don't laugh about the contact paper that's how I fixed mine in the mid eighties, not proud of it but I was young and poor then and the car is still has on it today.

nuthin wrong with contact paper. we used it to fix console tops years before any repos were made, and a buddy made a set of R/T sripes for his Challenger using white paper. way cheaper than Year One, and goos enough for a driver.

Our door panels are original however, we do have new repro ones waiting as there are some small cuts on the wood grain areas and other stuff. We plan on keeping the original door panels though as they are dated and coded!
