They came from the factory with ATF in them, some go to 90W gear oil but that sometimes slows the shifting down maybe in the frozen north. Me being in a warmer climate like you, I use Pennzoil Synchromesh or some thing like that, which appears to be about a 30-40W and it shifts great.

I am reading a lot of differences on several other forum sights. There seems to be a mix depending on the region these people live. I plan on using Valvoline 80W-90 gear oil. What made me start looking was that I had heard the newer gear oil has additives for the limited slip. This type of gear oil you donot want to use in the transmission. Upon further research I have found a lot of people living up north use ATF in their 833's instead of gear oil. Just asking I never heard of this myself. Wanted to find out if anyone on this forumuses ATF in the 833 and how does it work for them.

Newer trans came with ATF in them, but I'm pretty sure NPG was putting gear oil in them back in 1969.

That said, I don't know what's best.

The service manual calls for ATF or multi purpose gear oil :nachos:

Very true, it does list ATF for warmer climates. That said, if memory serves me right, the guys I knew that worked at NPG said they started putting ATF in the trans when they started building the 4 speed OD trans.

BTW, the former New Process Gear (New Venture/Magna) plant will be completely closed with everything shipped off to Mexico by the end of summer.

Just wondered what everyones thought were. Just seemed unusal to auto trans fluid in a manual. I just did not think it would work well, I am still going to use 80W-90.

My Bee had 80/90 in it when I bought it and it shifted like a dump truck. I have always used ATF or MTL (Motul motorcycle trans lube) which makes you look and sound like Ronnie Sox when your behind the wheel.

I remember being at the MoPar Nats about 14 or so years ago and he was there. This guy makes a couple of passes in his new Viper. He was fairly consistent as I recall. Ronnie jumps in the thing, had never even seen this car ever before in his life, and proceeds to knock about four tenths of a second off of the guy's ET on his first run. I don't think switching to ATF will buy you THAT kind of improvement... :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

He may not have been in a class all of his own...but it damn sure didn't take long to call the roll... :yesnod:

I've heard a couple similar stories about him driving cars faster then anyone else.

I have a buddy that went into a restaurant while at the Nat's to eat breakfast. There was a guy at the counter that he sat next to that looked familiar. They struck up a conversation and it turned out to be Ronnie Sox hisself. My buddy said that Ronnie was the nicest guy and they talked for quite a while.

That said... usually the owner isn't as fast in their own 4 speed car. It's all about caring about breaking it or not. Ronnie's left foot never hit that clutch pedal when he shifted.
