Thinking of a new rifle

Nothing serious. Just a .22 LR. I already have an old Ithaca Model 49 Saddle gun single shot .22 that shoots short, long and LR that my grandfather gave me. I haven't shot that gun in over 40 years. Needs a little cleaning and then off to the range with it.

I am considering either a Savage Mk II GXP bolt action or the Savage 64 GXP semi-auto w/ 10 round mag. Both come with a 4X32mm scope. I am also considering the Savage 64F at the bottom of the page and then buying a scope for it. Dick's will install and sight in the scope fro free when you buy one from them. A $40 scope makes it $189.99 while the other two are only $10 more and have the scopes already installed and ready to go. I'm going to go tomorrow morning and check them out. If I buy the scope separately I can check out a 3-9 scope vs. the 4x32. Check out the rifles on this page:

I have seen the bolt action on Youtube and from everything I am hearing it looks to be very accurate. Just want it for target shooting. Need to get to an outdoor range so I can get some distance practice. They have scopes, after all!

Ihave a Ruger 10 22 with a 30 round clip. Lot of fun to play with.

Unless you have your heart sent on a Savage,I would look at a 10/22 Ruger. It sets the standards for 22 LR semi auto's and there are a lot of accessories available . Another nice rifle is the lever action Henry, pricey but a lot of fun to shoot. Myself I have an old Remington Apache 22,( same as a Nylon 66 except clip fed) first gun I bought on my own when I turned 18.

I have a Remington Nylon 11. Bolt action, clip feed. Nice, but likes standard velocity LR only for accuracy.

I went to Dick's this morning and got the Savage 64 GXP semi-auto w/ 10 round mag and budget Tasco scope for $199 and a range/transport bag for another $35.99. After the background check they signed me up for their points program and a Dick's credit card and the total came out to just over $230, and when I fill out the online questionnaire I'll get a $10 gift card, so for just over $220 I think I did ok. I looked at both the bolt action and the semi-auto and decided on the semi-auto just for ease of use. I contacted Savage about recommended ammo as I would like to use .22LR rated at over 1,260 fps. I'll wait to hear what they say about that. I've got plenty of 1,260 fps copper coated hollow points to start out with. I know some .22LR doesn't work well with semi-autos so we'll just have to see how it likes certain ammo brands. I have some Winchester 36gr 1,280 fps copper coated hollow points and some Federal 36gr 1,260 fps copper coated hollow points to start with. Later on I plan to upgrade the scope with a better one that has gradations instead of plain crosshairs. I am also going to get a bipod for it as well. I think it will be a great little gun with which to learn scoped shooting.

Depends on how far you want to shoot. However, if you want accuracy, shoot some Eley or Lapua out of that Savage with a good rear bag. It will be a sub MOA rifle if you do your part.

Been looking at front and rear bags or a barrel mounted bipod. Shot 70 rounds through it last weekend and had the range all to myself for a good 45 minutes. Had to zero in the scope - it as waaay off. Got it zeroed in at 25 yards pretty good and then shot it at 50 yds (max indoor distance) and did fairly well for a rookie. I've got about 2000 rounds of Federal American Eagle 40 grain solid lead round nose plus a lot of hollow points, even though HP's aren't recommended for this gun according to Savage. Savage recommends Federal Gold Medal Target Match Grade solid lead or jacketed 40 grain ammo for this particular rifle but they said the Federal American Eagle is a-ok as well. I got the Federal stuff at TargetsportsUSA.com for a pinch over 9 cents per round, including shipping. I had no problems with clean-up after shooting. The bore looks clean as a whistle on both rifles. I got a 28" long rod and a bore snake. Cleanup is easy and I love the smell of the cleaners (I know, call me crazy). It reminds me of my dad's workbench. Back when I was a kid he was a business machine tech. He cleaned and maintained Monroe business machines; typewriters and adding machines. I loved the smell of the solvents and stuff he used. Part of the fun of shooting for me is cleaning the guns afterwards, although my H&R Model 999 Sportsman 9 shot .22 revolver takes longer than I would like. That one is tedious to clean but lots of fun to shoot.

I know this is an old thread but I got a S&W M&P 15-22 Sport at Christmas time. This week I got my 2.5 moa red/green dot (reticle) w/laser, 1" spacer and 6"-9" bipod for it. Sweet little setup. I'm calling it Project Pit Viper. Small but deadly.

Hey Dave, yeah. Posts are few and far between these days. Just a lot going on. Problems with the car overheating. I have replaced everything in the cooling system. I think the block may be silted up. Gonna drain it and pop the freeze plugs to see. Very discouraging.

Hey Dave. My buddy Jim is going to contribute an electric cooling fan to see if that will help as a short-term fix. I'll get it on and see. Haven't driven the car much this year, especially with mid-90 temps here in Orlando. Lots of other things going on that are claiming my budget so the RR is low on the priority list atm.
Wow - since I originally posted this thread I've gotten a S&W M&P 15-22 and (2) Savage Mk II's (his and hers). I love the Savage rifles, I guess partly because everyone seems to have a Ruger 10-22, CZ or Anschutz. If I have the finances later on this year I may pop for a Savage Mk II TRR SR and a S&W M&P 22 Compact (handgun). It would be nice to run some 2 gun Rimfire matches with the 22 Compact and 15-22. I have also obtained a budget red dot w/laser for my 15-22 (so much fun) and (2) budget 6-24x50mm AOE scopes for my 64 GXP and MK II. Love them. Makes it easy to see hits on target at 50 yds. I'm looking at a 1.24 ac. parcel of land in east Osceola County but I am doing some due diligence to see if it is worthwhile. Hopefully it will pan out.
