the car that started my MOPAR love

Hey i just found these pics while I was going through the family album. These were taken 2/68. Thats my old man standing next to it.

Its a 383 4 speed stripe delete GTS. It has green interior as well. A wierd point is the exhaust tips, I thought California cars werent allowed to have tips. Here is my mom and brothers with a shot of the GTS in the backround.

My Dad is an AMC guy, and his favorite car is the 1970 Rebel Machine which he still owns. I know what you're thinking, what does this have to do with MoPars or Roadrunners. Well I tell you, when I was growing up through the 80's people would walk up to my Dad's Machine and talk to him about what a sweet Roadrunner he had. I know, dumb right! As a kid I didn't know what a Roadrunner was, and after another famous roadrunner sighting at a car show I asked my Dad what a Roadrunner looked like. So we had found one at the car show and pointed it out, he continued pointing them out telling me about the different years and bodies they had. Shortly after that my knowledge of cars expanded from just knowing AMC's to Roadrunners and I could point them out myself. Ever since that early lesson on Muscle Cars I've loved Roadrunners and I could join in with my Dad on the eye rolling when his car was being called a Roadrunner time after time.

Great story! I'm a HUGE Machine fan. It's on my list of cars to have one day. I know where one is stashed away locally - the engine is long gone - and I keep tabs on it just in case it should ever hit the open market. I love the crazy dash boards in those things...

I almost bought a pale green one way back in the late '70's. The price was right but I had no place to keep it - plus I was driving my 1st road runner at the time. It was a decent car. And yeah - that dash layout sure was funky!

Rd's lucky, my dad sold Studebakers. So when I got my licence I had a choice of a 57 Packard (289 with Paxton supercharger) or a 57 Studebaker station wagon (289 4bbl).

We had Chryslers in the past, I remember a 54 Chrysler (331 Hemi) but I think what sold me on Mopars was our 64 Chrysler. It was the first new car my family had bought. It was so nice to drive compared to the 60 Buick we had at the same time. The Chrysler was solid the Buick was sloppy. The Chrysler was a 383 with 4bbl and had power like I had never felt. It also was the first car we ever had with air condationing. Living in the California desert I tried to talk my father out of it when ever I could. Then I went into the USAF, right after I got my draft letter and while I had a few car they were all just $100 used cars you drove until it needed some work, you got rid of it and got another $100 car. I have already told you the story of the robins egg blue 59 Sport Fury with the fake spare tire in the center of the trunk lid that I bought when I was discharged and sold when I took delivery of my new 69 RR. My father really like my RR and ended up buying a 69 New Yorker to pull his Airstream house trailer.
