I think I have been playing with wires for months. I think I may have finally got all the lights working. It really tried to drive me nuts ( not far to go lol ) but as of today at 2:30 all the lights worked. Now I could check tomorrow and maybe not. I had a Bad turn signal switch I had to change, I had 2 wires that were switched. Anyone that removed the lights and painted the car it will probably not be a plug and go when it is put back together. The 2 wires that were switched had to be that way when I got the car. One had a repair in it. It went to the front clearance lights. When I turned the headlights on they would go out. I kept reading the schematics and finally found the problem. The wire was not the right color,( is now ). WHEW didn't even take any beer. Big Mo.
 
Good job MO. That wiring is trying for sure. Did you get new wiring harness or use the old one. I am worried about the old wiring it is brittle and dose not look so good. Think I will OPT for new harness all over the car. Might be a mistake but that is what I would like to do. Keep at it and you will get through it. Russ.
 
Excellent! I feel your pain on the turn signal. I agree Russ. Since you’re redoing the entire car, from the ground up, put a new harness in and don’t chase gremlins in a ‘new car’.

Hi Russ, I did get a new harness for the engine and wiper. The rest I went over and cleaned up. I can't say I had trouble with the old wires as with grounding, switches and in the case of the 2 switched wires. I know you said about running a ground to the rear of the car. That will not hurt anything but in my case would not have helped me very much. My problem was getting the lights to ground in the sockets. I do know that without my shop man. with wire diagrams I would not got this. New harness would not really have helped me very much except for the 2 switched wires. Your friend Big Mo.

I know I posted that new might not have helped in my situation I probably would go that way.
 
I put new harnesses in my car. Nose to tail. Just powered it up for the first time on Sunday as I am nearly finished putting the car back together after having taken it down to a bare shell. Still have gremlins to chase despite brand new wiring. No brake lights and my reverse indicator light under the dash is fully illuminated any time the ignition is on. Nit-noi shit that shouldn't be too hard to track down, but there is always something - even if you replace the old with new.
 
Just pat her on the dash, rub the floor hump and sweet talk her, tell her it will be ok and it will all work out !
 
The last runner I did the new rear harness had all the pins were the mirror image of what they should have been at the kick panel plug. It was new.
 
Just to say one old car I had use to put a quarter in the ash tray and it would start rite up. Don't figure. I even threatened to sell it if it did not crank. Nope just put a quarter in the ash tray and it would crank rite up. Think it was haunted. LOL.
 
I used a new haywire kit and a laminated colored wire diagram. Need to sit and think about how to adapt some of it if want to use existing switches but it gets rid of that crappy firewall plug

Hi ACME A12, I feel your pain. I had a right turn signal indicator light on any time the ignition was on. What I found was after the car was painted, especially the way we paint most of the cars putting back the electrical parts it is much harder to get a good ground. My thoughts are that the factory did not paint every inch of the body like we try to do in a rebuild. Also switches, lights, wire ends, nuts, bolts, washers, and what ever are harder to get grounded. By far I am not an electrician. I am learning as I go. Hope this helps, From Big Mo.

Plybeep68 I done all that and sometimes I think she talked to me. Then there were times when I called her some things that might not have been the best but she stayed right there. Big Mo.
