Steering Shaft

I have a 69 4 speed with power steering. Ordered a new coupler for the steering box to connect to the steering shaft. The new one is correct but too short for my car. I’m a new owner of the car and understand that sometime in its history it was changed from from automatic to manual transmission and power steering may have added also. Would this make a difference in the length of the steering shaft?

have you tried to pull on the collapsible shaft out to slide into the coupler ?

A manual steering shaft is 3 inches longer than a power steering shaft. Most likely your's is collapsed.

What's wrong with the old one? This diagram may help.

Collapsible plastic pins in the two-piece shafts may be broken. The shaft leading to the steering box should slide in and out of the upper shaft to the steering wheel. It may be stiff from being pushed up into the other part of that assembly.

Changed mine and it was a pia.

Thought I pics of the steering collum taken apart. Inside the tube closer to the steering wheel where shaft in inside the tub is where I found those plastic pins that hold the two-piece shaft from sliding or bake away pins. During a crash this allows the shaft to collapse. When installing my steering back into the car found it had to slid towards the driver so the bolts would line up under the dash where the plastic retainers are. Hope this will help.

Have not bought one but have seen them. No trouble with mine like it is but had thought about getting one of those just in case. Thanks for the reminder.
