Rear Differential Question.

That is what I said. The ring gear outer edge should have number's on it. After looking on line if it is a GM rear end the number is close to the leaf spring mounting area. Picture showed right side towards the back. It is on the axel column.

OK, I've been doing a little research, meaning asking those in the know a little more about rear differentials than me (not hard to accomplish). Apparently this is a Chrysler 8.25 at least in their opinion. I'm being told Chrysler made this from 1942 to 1989 and it was made with a differential cover without a drain plug. But they agree the only way to tell for sure (per Russ69Runner & 69HemiBeep) is to pull it apart.

That is a pretty light weight Diff for a muscle car.

You will most likely find a Chrysler 8 1/4-inch rears under the following cars:
  • 1983-'89 Fifth Avenue
  • 1976-'80 Aspen and Volare
  • 1975-'83 Cordoba
  • 1972-'76 Coronet
  • 1973-'76 Dart, Duster, Scamp, Valiant
  • 1977-'88 Diplomat
  • 1983-'84 E-Class
  • 1972-'78 Fury, Monaco
  • 1973-'89 Grand Fury
  • 1981-'83 Imperial
  • 1977-'81 LeBaron
  • 1980-'83 Mirada
  • 1972-'82 New Yorker
  • 1972-'81 Newport
  • 1972-'73 Polara
  • 1975 Road Runner
  • 1979-'81 St. Regis
  • 1975-'77 Royal Monaco

But honestly? I'm still suspect this is the case, that this is a Chrysler 8.25. I can find no documentation they were made as far back to 1942 as I was told, or that they had a differential cover on the 8.25 that did not have a drain plug.

Its a fill plug and depending on the year and make some have the plug up front in the casting. What does the cover measure top to bottom.

OK, at least someone can confirm. So now I'm less skeptical. Maybe it is a Chrysler 8.25

Thank you ... I will be pulling the cover on wednesday 7/25 to see whats in there.

The plug is in the front casting on the passenger side...I watched a video on you tube that was an original chrysler service video of a 8.25 rebuild and it looked exactly the same.

Well this could be true. Like was stated it is kind of light for a runner. I would rather it be a GM Positive track rear end though. It would be a lot stronger rear end. Well let us know what you find out when you open that can of worm's. Russ. :kartman: Where the heck is that beer assistant???????
