My 68 RR finally has paint

My long term project 1968 RR
with A-12 lift-off hood 383/479ci-6bbl
LL1 surf turquoise metallic,
with black below the body line
& a thin red accent line...
{after being ultra flat black for 10 year}
Still needs a cut & buff,
but wanted to get it out & share

New Halogen headlights &
all new marker lights & taillight/backup bulbs etc.
cleaned up the org. chrome & trim pieces a bit
I'm still debating on putting the wheel well arch trim back on,
maybe get new one the org.'s are a bit rough...

So far I kind of like it with out the wheel well trim...

Not show quality by any stretch,
but looks decent for a garage paint job
the engine bay is still old org. paint,
I'll do that at a later time...

and who's fault is that????? :poke: the old foot tapping guy would be better but this will do.
a lot of things...when my garage burned down and I lost my other runner plus my Uncle's 300, it was like a steel toed kick to the nuts. I mainly got the car I have now because it was a weird feeling not to have a Mopar muscle car for the first time in over 20 years. I was going thru the motions..but really into it. Took me a long time to get that feeling back....then I got my buddy to do the body work, and then he was diagnosed with COPD and couldn't spray iy. And a lot of body guys won't paint over someone else's work, so I said screw it and put the car back together again.

I haven't been here in a while, I spend most my time on FBBO...

IMO it looks better in photos than in person,
a few flaws, some scratches under the clear
I didn't/couldn't see, I'm hoping will go away after the
wet-sanding/more cut & buff they won't be as noticeable
my garage isn't lit right to do that stuff, I hate wearing glasses
I don't usually need them except to read, but it always seems
I have to wipe them off {sweat & dust} constantly to see too...
IMO it's a bit blotchy for a lack of a better term,
{it was kind of like that, from the factory, before I had the ultra flat black too}
there no runs, no thin spots, plenty of paint, but
just not what I expected...
It maybe just the way the light hits it {?},
it seems a lot better looking out in the sunshine,
not so noticeable, than when it's in florescent lights of the garage...

I forgot how difficult a metallic paint job was,
but it'll do for now...
Like I said it isn't show quality, by any stretch,
just doesn't have the deep luster I was thinking,
a little more cut & buff will probably help...

if need be, if the cut & buff doesn't look much better

I has 3 coats now, acrylic lacquer, I can recoat anytime...
IMO the 3rd coat "I think maybe {?} I was moving too fast",
kind of went on too dry, if that makes any sense {?},
it didn't gleam afterwards, like the 1st 2 coats did...
I may just scuff, clean & degrease, the main body, so it'll bite,
then tape/paper off all the windows, chrome, trim, wheel/tires,
grill, mirrors etc., not completely take it all apart,
plenty of clear under all the trim & bumpers etc...
Seems like it's just really the top of the car trunk-lid & roof...
But IF I do it, I might as well cover the whole car...

Been a decade since I did a full paintjob,
unfortunately it's a garage paintjob...LOL
but;
I'm loving it has the org. LL1 color again...

It looks good driving down the road too,
getting a shitload of thumbs up, from a mostly Ford & Chevy area...
The CHP & Sheriff down the street both really like it,
that always helps :)

Yea going to paint mine in the garage. Light is bad going to buy a few more lights before painting. Hang them down from the celling with wire so I get light to the side's. I would try buffing the parts that aren't shining. But if worst comes to worst start wet sanding it. Just to see if you are missing something. I know a lot of wet sanding goes into custom paint job. Hope you figure it out but all in all good looking car.

Giving it a third coat after it is dry is not a good Idea. What type of clear did you use. Matrix is the best out of all clear think SD-50. Saw a guy on U tube paint a hood for a desk and did not have enough hardener for his third coat ran and got some and mixed it up and of course it went bad. He said to paint all coats with a flash time of 20 to 25 minutes. Food for thought. Lets see some pic's it might not be that bad and you can't tell with it doing 80 MPH down the highway. Yea mine probably will have dirt and cat hair in the paint job. Good luck and lets see it.

Florescent lights will show all the flaws in a paint job. If it is dull cut and buff it more.

Lacquer all way's needed to be hand rubbed. The heat from your hand's helped level the lacquer. Now dose acrylic lacquer work the same way or not. If the clear looks foggy and not clear as you want then may be the gun was not set rite. The paint might have been to thin and the too much air may make it cloudy. The weather has a big effect on the paint job with out an environment controlled climate. Makes it rough. I prefer it to be cool and dry. Witch it is hard to get here in Fla. Best of luck to you on what ever you decide to do.

I'm thinking the last coat of clear was afternoon
it was warm, probably 80* to maybe 85* in the garage

I used the same gun/air/nozzle settings I did on the 1st 2 coats

I think I may have been moving too fast,
maybe I was impatient, after smelling paint fumes for a day or something
maybe kind of a dry coat, on the final coat

it cleaned up pretty well

I'll have to take some more photos, with a better camera
than the cheap ass $49.99 Vivitar X022 (Walmart) digital

I have a flip phone, no camera & I'm a lousy photographer

it's a labor of love

never mind the date stamps they are wrong, too
it was just a while ago I took the ones in the garage
