Here is a resto project I could tackle all by myself - as there is only 1 piece! I bought an original 1969 plate at a swap meet a few years ago; to use on my car (GA allows you to run a "year" plate on your car if it is 1970 or older). Here are my steps:
1. I used a 3M paint remover wheel on it to get the paint off.
2. Then let it soak in evaporust until all rust was gone.
3. Painted it zinc primer and added some Permatex spot bondo to any holes.
4. Sanded down the filled spots and hit it with a coat of primer filler.
5. Painted 2 coats of black.
6. Used a Sharpie paint pen on the raised sections, many coats (5?) until the color was pretty good.
7. Sprayed 2 coats of clear on both sides to protect it.
It looks pretty nice from a few feet and back. It still has some pits but I think it will do the job. Here is a pic of it finished.
