At is point I would suggest that you get a wiring schematic for the car and start tracing the wires. When you find where they go you might start figuring out what's going on.
Yes what Raodcuda said. I think your on the rite track with what someone else had done to disable the car from being cranked. Or set of some kind of alarm.
But it is sad when red wires turn pink after year's and purple look like blue also white turn's brown. Then I think it is time for a new wiring harness.
I once installed the portion of a harness on a 63 Corvette, which wasn't bad at all. But that was just the dashboard. Doing an entire car would be pretty amazing.
