Hey guys, so we had the Runner towed to a shop today because we still can't get to the bottom of why she won't start. Charging system is fine, battery new. MSD tech support told us the MSD box was bad. Got new one, still no joy.

I guess I should have researched before I bought it, but I'm hearing now that these MSD electronic ignition systems are no good.

If we decide to trash the MSD system, a couple questions:

1) how much power will I lose by going with a regular electronic ignition from say Mopar Performance?
2) what are you guys running and having luck with?

Thanks guys, the saga continues.

I've had good luck with MSD ignitions, better luck than I ever had with the Mopar Performance stuff. That's just me though. Your mileage may vary.

Power loss? None really. You'll actually make as much power with a point distributor. The electronics add reliability (in theory anyway), better driveabilty and starting.

What distributor and coil are you using? Ballast resistor?

Distributor and coil are all MSD products. The Coil is their Blaster coil. The shop we took it to determined that the second MSD box is bad too. Wiring was fine, it is just another defective unit. We've been told by a couple of different people now that once you return the unit to MSD for repairs, it comes back way better than new. The factory in China must be using some inferior components that they know how to fix here in the States.

MSD is supposed to be made in Texas. Last time I bought one anyways, been a few years. I have seen and heard MSD units being counterfitted by Chinese factories and those ones are giving MSD a bad name. If MSD has turned Chinese I bet they wont be in business for long. Anyways MSD has great trouble shooting charts available and I have used their products exclusively for years with great results.

My experience has been the same as Bob, Chris and George. I have had a 6AL in my Cobra for eight years with no trouble. I wonder how your shop determined the MSD box was bad. I had trouble with the first box I installed and returned one or two before I figured out that I did not have a good ground. As I recall MSD goes to some lengths to emphasize the importance of a good ground. If it were me that is where I would be looking.
