I know there is a million of these threads out there, but real quick gentleman. my build is going to be very close to original, with the minor camshaft change. The old 484 lift cam would be the first choice without research, but I'm ready to buy the cam and get it to my machine shop. (383) Stepping up a bit from stock, utilizing the 906's, and a eddy intake, changing the gearing to 3.55's 2800 or 3000 rpm stall, give me some good advice for the cam, because I need to decide by the weekend. The car will be driven to shows and the occasional meet at the track. Give me two or three good options. Thanks

That's what I did. The guy I talked to was very helpful, made a suggestion, I went with it and have been very happy with it.

if you are not happy with comp cams, or a second thought, Racer Brown did my cam.
This was about 10 years ago so i'm not sure if he is still in the biz....but back in the day he was one of the best at understanding what your mopar wants.
You need to give him all the information about your combo and what you what from your car. and he will set you up!

If you up to at least 9.5 to 1 compression ratio then the old 484 Purpleshaft would be a great choice in my opinion especially with the 3000 rpm stall.

I used to have a 440 with the 484 Purple Shaft. I would not recommend it in a slightly warmed up 383 given your projected driving habits. If you want to do an old Purple Shaft, I'd consider the 272 instead. But that wouldn't be my first choice for a camshaft.

I'm building a stock 69 383HP. After a phone call to Bob karakashian of Mr.6Pack Racing Engines, I decided on his propritiaty Mr.6Pack grind. In the very least, give Bob a call. He will drop what he’s doing and talk camshafts and Mopars with you. I think you’ll be glad you did. I was.

484 Purple shaft is a great cam if you're stuck in some space time continuum and the year is 1984... Otherwise you're just using outdated technology...

I'm always reading that the old 484 is a thing of the past and it is outdated. Others will say call this company or that one for a recommendation on a better choice. Every cam distributor wants to sell their cams but does anyone have real world data that a cam comparable to any of the Mopar Purpleshafts are better performers? I have done many cam swaps on my 440 using different manufacturers and I have not found anything better than a Mopar Performance camshaft especially in the 284/484 range. Remember, its all about getting the combination matched up.

I'll second either Comp or Bob Karakashian based on what you are planning to do with the car. For a cruiser I'd go with the Bob Karakashian cam. He told me that in a fairly stock 383 with mild mods to install his cam 2 degrees advanced. For heavier duty I went with the Comp XE-275HL. Specs are 231-237 @.050" lift, 110 deg. c/l and .525" lift. I was able to get away with this cam as I have valve reliefs in my pistons to clear the extra lift. Also, my setup is beefier as well with a balanced bottom end, TRW 11:1 pistons, ported 452 heads, oversize 2.14"/1.81" valves, 1.6 CAT roller rockers (giving a lift of .560") with chrome rocker shafts, Edelbrock Performer RPM intake and Holley 750 modded for 4 corner idle, TTI 1-7/8" headers and 3" exhaust with 3" stainless Magnaflow mufflers, stock 3.55 geared 8-3/4" Sure Grip rear end and 4 speed trans. As ykf7b0 said above, its all about the combination. If you overcam the engine it will run like a pig but if you get it right it will be a lot of fun!

I'm staying out of the purple cam battle because there are new versions out some even dual pattern but the old ones are yesteryear or they wouldn't have new versions. Look at Mancini's site.

Very good point but some hard core proof of performance increases would be nice. Just sayin................................

One good aspect of the new grind is the larger lobe separation for a better idle thus not causing your eyes to bleed from unburned fuel, but then you don't sound like your driving a funny car either.

Lol!!! not even close to a funny car. It is full bodied/full interior and street driven much more than its raced. It's good for 7.50 1/8 mile e.t.'s on motor and 6.90's on nitrous with the 284/484 Purpleshaft and 915 heads. If I knew I could pick up a couple of tenths e.t. I would do a cam swap but I haven't found that cam yet.

I was going to mention Hughes, they utilize the wider mopar cam lobes that some don't, just not as large of selection.
