Finding reverse detent difficulty

More often than not I have difficulty finding reverse. All forward gears are fine. I understand it takes a bit extra pressure.

Is it better to try to feel the reverse detent coming out of 2nd or 1st, or does it matter?

Is there a best technique to help a new RR owner?

Thanks for any insights!

Could be the linkage needs adjusted. From neutral can you go to the left into the revers gate or do you have to move the shifter up and down a little to find it?

Usually I’ve found it immediately after out of first and the right pressure left. But finding the gate seems inconsistent. I admit it could be me tho because it’s so new.

UPDATE: Should it matter if the motor is running or not? Again, could be my perception but I tried it again just now and found the gate smack to left of neutral - where it should be.
One other time, sitting the garage, I had good luck finding it. Then getting gas it was elusive.
That’s why asked about the motor running.

Its different with the engine running. Make sure the clutch is disengaging no lazy left foot and go from a synchronized gear like 1st or second that helps stop any movement in the trans. Cold thick gear oil makes it worse.

Reverse gear is not synchronized sometimes you have to wait and make sure the clutch is fully depressed is the motor on or off if its both then try adjustment.

I didn’t make the engine on/off distinction before today. With the motor off it seems normal. I can find the reverse gate consistently. My issues looking back have been with the engine on. There’s no issue engaging reverse then starting the car? I’ve never started any manual engaged before. That’s why I’m being sure here.

Is your car a 70, with the reverse key lock linkage? Mine is a little rough going into and out of reverse because of the linkage, which was all rebuilt with new bushings. Most people take that whole assembly right off, but oh no, not me!

Ooops, sorry for that man. But mine is a ‘69. What I’ve discovered now is it seems normal/easy to find reverse gate with the ignition off. If the car is running, finding R out of Neutral is sketchy.

At times my four speed is a little hard to get into reverse. If yours's a four speed, make sure clutch pedal is all the way down. Then wait a second to go into reverse. That seems to help in shifting.

Thanks. It is a A833. You’re the second person that’s given me the tip to wait an extra bit when it’s running. I haven’t had a chance to check that technique yet. It’s the engine off it’s easy. Just when running.

Appreciate the reply!
