Engines out

cruised down to a show about 500km from home, she ran great but burned way too much oil.
Turns out some wear and tear were covered up by the previous owner ( i only picked the car up about a month ago).

Thought I'd give it a refresh, but, while its out.....







While it was out, thought I'd give the Shifter a bit of a clean up too



It had more play when engaged in gear than between em, but she clicks back and forth real crisp now.

Im no expert on engine internals, but i know my way around. Im just getting some of the bottom end (read "deep pockets) beefed up. Looks like whoever put it together slapped it in quick either for quick sale or because they ran out of dough after the nice paintjob haha

Looks like head gasket where leaking. Maybe check the surface of booth the heads and the block mating surface. I would mike the jugs from top to bottom if no scars or gouges in them and they speck out. Hone them and put an new set of ring's in clean the pistons ring grove. May be not as bad as it seems. Oh check valve guides if loose scored or any other deformity their. If valves look good reseat them if they aren't worn to bad. Found speck's on Internet for mopar engines. Also going to go through mine while she is out it is a 383. It ran good but while it is out better to safe than sorry. Well hope this help's have rebuilt many a engine my self saved money by not taking them to a machine shop time is money the more you can do the more you save. You can hone a cylinder your self but boring is best left up to the machine shop. Good luck and keep us up to date on the progress. Russ. :cartman: Now where did I put that engine caliper.

Since you got it out, add a stroker crank, some Trick flow heads & a nice bump stick

yeah with the new ali heads should put out somewhere between 500-550 with no problems, but i still wanna be able to sit in it and drive to Melbourne. A nice comprimise.

Darn Quickbird that what I was going to say. I am like a kid when ups or fedx show's up. Looking good nothing like new part's. What did you find out on the jug's are they in good shape and did you check the head's and block matting surface's. Just wondered what you found out. Originally went for the Edelbrock RPM heads, but no one in the country has a set, so ive gone with a set of Aeroflow heads instead, they flow slightly better than the Edelbrocks, but not quite as much as the Trickflow heads.

A set of forged pistons are currently in transit from the US, so the sooner they get here, the sooner the block will be off to the machine shop!

Decided to go the extra mile and port-match the new heads. even though theyre OOTB bolt-on. they still needed a tickle.

old rocker h=gear was O-K, but after seeing the state of some of the retainers, decided to take the "buy once, cry once" approach. here are some old vs new pics

Finally dropped her back in, kicked her in the guts, and BANG - she started first go! Only problem though, was that epic 7 quart sump bottomed out on the first road test. Luckily we got her back in before she ran dry. On the hunt now for a higher-capacity oil pan with stock depth.

New pistol grip helped to keep the smile on my face though!
