on my 69 Hemi the specs are: with the vacuum advance line disconnected and plugged, at idle the setting is 12.5 degrees of advance. Now as far as what unit to buy, I got mine at Napa and it has an adjustable zero setting for ease of reading, and I think it's of the inductive type. Look for a slim unit, so you can snake it where you can easily read the mark.

I have used the formula and timing light's. Now this the old way that I was shown. Loosen the distributor with the motor running advance it till the motor speeds up. Now back it down till it start's to shudder. Then advance it till it smooth's out. Tighten the bolt so the distributor dose not move and check the timing mark again. See if that is close to what it should be. It work's for me.
