Has anyone had a problem ruining new ceramic headers while breaking in a new cam?

TTI warns you to use an old set of headers at break in or you might ruin the coating. I will be very careful. Thanks

Yeah I'd turn the mixture screws out anyway but at 2k the carb should be transitioning into a cruise circuit not so much idle

Hmmm? I was not aware of the potential problem. Of course I’ve never had ceramic headers. It may possibly happen because car is stationary with no airflow over headers and continuous running at 2,500-3,000 rpm. If lean it would definitely cook about any finish Shades of blued chrome! Good luck!

I agree with the lean mixture. If you put a cam in with bigger lob's then you need more fuel with more air getting in the motor. We put bigger jet's in our carb's when running a bigger cam lift. If it is just a street cam then would open the jet's. Still sometimes you have to put a bigger jet in their. Good luck with the new cam.

Generally overheated headers comes from the ignition being retarded, the combustion process isn't completed in the chamber and continues in the header. I may have some authority to speak on this as I have my own dyno and run EGT sensors on all cylinders while the engine is on the dyno. I don't recall any case where the engine was lean and cooked the headers.

Well there you go an expert! But still I had a friend turn his chrome headers blue in short order he left a manifold plug out and caused a real lean condition is what I was going by.

I like that a friend turned his header's blue. Thought all of them did that after running them for a while. I see these show cars with all the chrome exhaust on them and no blue mean's they never run the motor. They push them or pull them in for the show.

didnt put new headers in my car till after the cam was broken in, but also didnt change the dizzy or carbie, wanted to keep as much of the old stuff there as the car ran good before the new cam. would make any troubleshooting easi(er).

Also got the new headers coated in black, so probably wouldnt have shown any signs of burning. Cant be too safe though.

We have done it both ways. Break in with an old set of junk headers, then install the new ceramic coated headers & then also with just using the ceramic coated headers on my buddies 69' Camaro & it did not burn off during break in but they did discolor some & are not the shiney silver as they were out of the box but still look great after several street years of use..

Make sure your timing isn't retarded and don't run it lean and it should be fine.
I broke in my cam with brand new ceramic headers...no issues.
Also had a fan in front of the car...

Had the exact same experience on a 340 Duster break-in about a dozen years ago. Just dulled them down a bit for the first couple of inches up near the flanges. Factory coated Hedmans.
