Automatic console shift knob removal

The service manual for 1969 says to remove allen screw on shift knob then to unscrew button, spring and knob assembly from cable end and remove from lever. This can't be difficult to do, but mine just spins and doesn't come off the shift lever. Is there some trick to this that I'm over looking?

Unscrew the collar the button will come off with it.

Are you referring to the chrome ring between the button and shift knob?
