most diesel motors need them if they are outside or in sub zero temps. i would never unless i was in Alaska use a block heater for a gas engine. in these cars you have got to be kidding me if you feel the need to drive when it is that cold.
keeping battery clean and dry is the key. in the car or out for storage, clean and dry. as far as trickle charging, if charger can read a full charge and shut off, i would prefer that. if charger is always on, then you are just cooking battery for no reason. long charge periods generate heat...
