I assume these are OEM covers and not the cast Mopar Performance type covers? If the cast type, hammering on them, as well as over tightening will crack them.
My Mopar Performance passenger side cover would not seal. A little RTV on both sides of the gasket solved my leak.
After reading this I had to go back and double check. Mine DOES have a clear plug (no clock or tach). Well, at least it used to be clear. It is somewhat aged and yellowed now.

Russ, I think there is a huge disparity between then and now. I replaced a camshaft on a '78 Ford 302 due to wiped cam lobes. The car was run on 10W40 and had oil changed every 3000 miles (late '70's to early '80's motor oil). There was no mud, it was more like pudding. I had to scrape that shit...
I used the Sta-Lube and it shifted like molasses in January with gear clash in a gears until warmed up. Switched to Penzoil synchromesh fluid and it shifts like butter.
