I'm thinking my car came from Virginia prior to me buying it here in Ohio. The previous owner had it about 7 years, and I've owned it for the last 6. I've been trying to speak with someone by phone at the Virginia DMV, but well, its the DMV......

Anyone ever successfully traced a title in Virginia, or am I wasting my time?

Thanks!

Normally that search through law enforcement will only give the last location of registration. I tried that looking for my old Runner. I provided my VIN # and it pop saying I still owned it.

Nope. I don't have any contacts in Virginia.

In Ohio do you have any contacts?

Yeah, myself included. I ran the info myself thru Ohio and it returns to me and the previous owner here in Ohio. Nothing prior to that.

The way I have done it here in California is that I provide my DMV service (dont waste your time with the incompetent DMV) with a letter(s) sealed and they will send it out to all the known owners over the past. Sometimes it actually turns up someone. The key is that they need to still live in the address that they owned the car at. I just did it with my sons Road Runner and it turned up the original owner that is still living in the same house that they brought the car home to when it was new.

Chris, I wish it was that simple up here. I have been looking for the original owner and info on my car since I bought it 32 years ago. No luck yet. I did find the guy before the guy I bought it from but there is still someone else before him and the dealership. Haven't found the dealership yet either. I even called multiple places in the USA to see if the info was there but nothing but dead ends. They will not give me any info. Privacy rules. Very frustrating to say the least. :brickwall: I do have a new recent friend that works for the police force here that I have mentioned it to and am going to try him next I guess. Maybe he can open some doors for me. I'm going to keep pressing on with this for sure.

Ken.

I stopped in to see the previous owner of my car yesterday to confirm my car came from Virginia. I didnt know this, but the owner before him actually brought my car and a Charger RT up from Virginia as far as he can remember. Unfortunately that owner is now deceased, and he doesn't think there would be any more Ohio connections. I did an Ohio title search and found that my car had been first titled here back in 1995; probably when the guy brought it up from Virginia. It was then titled twice in 2006: once to the previous owner, and then to me. Ive submitted an inquiry within Ohio to see if I can get any information off of that first title in 1995. All I really want is the state. Im not expecting much though.

I finally got ahold of Virginia DMV and was able to ask a few questions. It seems as though they purge their records after 11 years, so even if my car was confirmed to come out of Virginia, there wouldn't be any record on file for it now.

Well that sucks Steve. I have done a vehicle search with our ministry of transportation here too but they can't tell me anything about the car outside of my own province. They don't have records for other provinces. All it tells me is the guy I bought it from and the guy he bought it from in Ontario. But the first guy when I talked to him says he got it from a used car lot in 1978 so there is I think one more person between him and the dealer. :brickwall:

Yeah, that's too bad. You've gotten farther than me though. Good luck in your search!
