just got myself an original horn and it has some rust on it. anyone have any suggestions on cleaning it with out ruining it? originals always seem to sound better and i want to get this one ready. is it a matter of using sandpaper, wire wheel, maybe carefully bead blasting?

If the rust is in an area that won't allow moisture into the horn Evapo Rust will work very well. You can even dampen a sponge and dab it or lay it on the rust and it will take care of it.

I don't know if you can hurt these things Mac, I covered mine with paint stripper and washed it with water sanded it and washed it again. I dried it really well and tested it before painting and it was fine :yesnod:

well here is what i got. first pic is how it was received. second pic is cleaned and primed and the last is assembled and painted. the pic looks more blueish than what it looks like in person, but is a different hue than the repop i had on the car. paint was testors model paint #1234. installed horn and it does sound different and better than the repop. just wainting for the decals to show up.

wire brush on a bench grinder for the vented area. then masked that off and sandblasted everything else.

I called her but, she wants $200 a hour. Mac, did you have to treat the bare metal with a rust neutralizer after cleaning or was it clean enough to prime. Just asking because mine is on the list....

i was all surface rust. wiped it down with some prep solution and used a good self etching primer and it was good to go.

i don't know how that would have removed rust, but rubbing them on my horn does sound nice. :leg:

I'm glad to see we are able to stay on topic. Oh and by the way nice horn, please dont post pics of her rubbing on your horn. :basketcase:
