oil pans

Hey guys, been awhile.

My oil pan has a nice dent in it (I imagine from a jack). And, my car has
a '72 440 HP in it. I'm under the impression any wedge big block pan from the era
will fit. If I might be missing something please post.

There are four quart pans and five quart pans out there, Sam. Grab a five quart pan if you're going to change it. :cents:

if its not totaled I have had pretty good luck taking the pan off and straightening it

440 Source has good prices on new pans too. In any event make sure to get a pan that has the sump in the same location as your old dented one. If you plan on getting a bigger capacity pan than your original you probably should get a new pickup as well.

Around here (in snowy Buffalo) these old beasts are just starting to come out
of garages again and our season is just beginning. I gotta go get mine from
storage this morning. Good to have the car back and chatting on this page
as well.

Yes of course - but like John stated you need to make sure that you have the correct pick-up for whatever pan you get - they don't all work with one-another - mostly due to baffling in the pans and the requisite shape then required by the pick-up to work around the baffles.

As you have a '72 440 (assuming it is out of a B-Body) it should have a 2951564 pan - no numbers stamped in the bottom. If it is a '72 casting but actually a '73 engine it should then have a "971" pan - p/n 3614970. This a a good 5 qt pan. No matter what you get, make sure you also grab the pick-up to save yourself some headaches. And again, if you're going to change it why not add some capacity...? If you buy a new aftermarket pan get a Hemi pan with 5 qt capacity.

Trying to find a good 40 year old pan that isn't bent, have rust pin holes or other issues that doesn't cost as much as brand new pan might be hard to find.

You're exactly right, Big. Even though I have no intentions of using it, I was ecstatic when I scored that 402 repopped pan for Bambi in the group buy over on the LOH Playground. I had gotten really tired of looking at over-priced, rusty, dented-up, POS pans & pick-ups at the swap meets. As I mentioned before, I opted for a Milodon Hemi pan and 1/2" PU for the engine that will ultimately reside in Bambi's engine bay. Bob K told me that the stock 440 oil pump can suck a 4 qt 402 pan completely dry in a quarter mile race - that was enough to convince me that additional capacity is required.

He is doing really well. He really takes after my wife (blonde/blue) and is rather tall and thin for his young age of 11 months. Nothing like me; short, dark hair, dark eyes. I got real lucky and not only married a woman with a wonderful personality (that let me buy a 40 year old car two months before my son was born) but she is also tall, blonde, and attractive. How a guy like me was able to do so well will always be a mystery.

But, my boy is doing great. He made it through his first Buffalo winter with no major illnesses besides the sniffles and is a very pleasant kid. Didn't deal with a colicy baby at all. I'm very lucky.
