:brickwall: took the car to easter, church and parents house.temp gauge must be off ,running center of the gauge it at 212 degs and after the run (driving nice)shut off the car and all the fuel disappears in the filter and seems to flood the carb. is that the typical vapor lock or is it boiling the fuel putting it in the motor? :brickwall: what steps should I try?alum rad take thermostat outcarb spacer ? this has my dad saying carb is bad even if it is only 1.5 years old. I am leaning towards the heat prob being the cause.
any help would be great!

Check your timing and make sure your not to far advanced. It sounds as if you have one of those cool glass filters, glass holds heat and transfers it to the fuel. Probably not the main problem though.

THERE ARE SO MANY THINGS
CK THE HOSES....VERY SOFT/IS IT SUCKING CLOSED WHEN HOT?
IS THERE AIR IN THE COOLING SYSTEM/DID YOU DRILL A 1/8 INCH HOLE IN THE THERMOSTAT?
LIKE BOB SAID....TOTAL TIMING.....34/36 DEGREES?
FAN BELT LOOSE?
FUEL LINE/FUEL FILTER CLOSE TO EXHAUST MANIFOLD?
WHAT KIND OF COOLING FAN ARE YOU RUNNING?/DO YOU HAVE A SHROUD?
IS THE RADIATOR COLD /WARM AT THE BOTTOM AND HOT AT THE TOP WHEN RUNNING AT 212?/RADIATOR CLOGGED?
VACUUM ADVANCE WORKING?/ VACUUM HOSE LEAKS/INTAKE LEAK?

Is the engine actually over-heating (belching coolant, steam, etc)? Or is the gauge inaccurate? A carb insulator (not to be confused with a base-plate gasket - although it serves the same purpose) is always a good idea on these cars. You can get them from Summit, JEGS, etc. 1/4-3/8" should do it. As mentioned, keeping the fuel cool is the key.

Another thing (maybe you've already considered this) is to use an intake gasket with the exhaust cross-over blocked off. This greatly reduces heat in the intake manifold. Of course the factory choke won't work as well, if you use one, in which case you can wire it open.

ok this is what I did sofar. Removed thermostat and disconnected heater core. tested the stat it didnt open all the way till 200degs. filled with water and run for 15mins never got over 180. took a drive ran the piss out of it and checked temp 180 the fuel filter seemed to stay half full (and the filter is a fram plastic filter not glass) think its safe to go without a thermostat?

I'd run a 160° thermostat.

I'll second the carb insulator. I had a lot of problems with my car overheating when stuck in traffic and moving slowly where it would get to the point where it was hard to keep running and wanted to stall out. It ran normal temps at driving speeds. I had the radiator cleaned, and finally also had the block flushed out. One other thing that was found was that the jets were too big for normal driving and the occasional play time! The jets were replaced with stock sizes along with adding the carb insulator and it really helped with keeping it at normal temps and getting it restarted while still hot like stopping after a long drive to get gas. I drove my car for a while without a t-stat and it didn't really make much difference as far as cooling goes. If you need heat though you won't get much! FWIW I'm running a 160 also.

it is safe but the reason for the thermostat is to slow the flow of water in the radiator so it cools the water down....180 degrees is the perfect temp....like big john said try a 160 and see what happens........the radiator sounds possibly clogged.......maybe flush out the system

Sounds like that stat was bad. I ran a 160 and the car was way too cold. I put in a 190 and it was great. You need it hot enough to swell all the parts together properly. Oil stayed much cleaner.

I would ditch any filter that isn't metal after I was sure my tank and system were clean.
