I am stumped nevertheless.

The new-to-me 2010 Ranger I just bought is a stripper. It has A/C and the Trailer Towing Package, that's it. Rubber floor mat, roll up windows, and nothing electric (like windows or locks) in the cab. The AM/FM radio has a total of four buttons...

So I bought a AM/FM/CD/DVD unit for it. Here's a link to the model that I bought:

http://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-AVH-P3200 ... im_sbs_e_3

I installed it yesterday and it works great except for one thing; the DVD player will not function due to a safety override. At the end of the day I really don't care as I have no plans to drive around watching movies nor am I going to sit in the driveway and watch them. But as it has the capability I'd like for it to work. So here are the details:

It is supposed to be wired into the parking brake switch. This allows the unit to ensure that the vehicle is stationary while the DVD playback feature is enabled. The wiring diagram clearly instructs you to wire this to the power feed side of the switch. As it is looking for a 12V feed I initially just provided it with a 12V source - knowing that I would never use this feature while driving anyway and because I did not want to go through the hassle of getting under the dash to do this (parking brake is foot-operated). This did not work. Reluctantly I climbed under the dash and snaked the wire over to the switch. Access was limited due to the small size of the cab and the wiring harness design does not allow you to move the switch & harness much for access -this was a recurring theme for the day and if I attempt to fix this I will likely remove the seat to be able to better get under the dash on the next go-around. I don't have a wiring diagram for the truck, but only had two choices for tying in the unit; a black wire and a blue wire to the switch. Had I been able to actually get at the switch I would have unplugged it and grabbed the old multi-meter to determine power side. I couldn't and went the shadetree route; I picked blue and used the supplied wire splice to make the connection. No go. Undid what I had just done and this time selected black. Still no go. Decided I didn't need DVD capability at this time, un-snaked the wire, buttoned everything up and finished the install. Hoping somebody knows something about these things and can tell me how to fix it...

The two wires to the parking brake switch are TINY; look smaller than 22 gauge? Is it possible that the voltage is stepped down prior to reaching the switch? Just trying to understand why the wires are so tiny and why just providing the unit with 12V from another source didn't enable this function...

The wire splice clearly cut through the insulation on the wires at the switch; why didn't one of them enable the DVD function? I'm really scratching my head over this one. And YES, I engaged the parking brake during both trials.

I'm sure I've missed something really obvious so bust out the :stooges: and let me know.

just throwing this out there. if it has a towing package and the wires going to the brake switch seem smaller than they should, is there a module used to light the brake lights and the brake switch is used as only a signal to the module? if that is the case there maybe would not be 12v at the switch but a 5v signal voltage. i'm just quessing.

Things may have changed since I put the wrenches down, but every parking brake switch is controlling the ground and not only supplies the computer with a ground to switch other items, like transmission lock up in an automatic. So connecting the DVD player to those lines wont do anything. It should have worked with a constant 12v source and you may be chasing 2 different problems. Did you hook it to the battery or did you assume you had a 12v source. Just curious, most cars these days control grounds to actuat things.

Okay, so now thanks to Jim I can drive down the road and watch videos at the same time... :basketcase:
Very distracting...I can see why they advise against this... :yesnod:

More importantly, I think I found out why this did not work when connected directly to the parking brake. Apparently you are supposed to engage the parking brake, disengage the parking brake, and then re-engage the parking brake in order to access the video playback feature; I did not know this and so I only engaged the brake and tried it. The aforementioned would provide a manual version of "seeing ground" as Jim described it rather than using the relay to accomplish the same. Probably would have worked in one of the initial configurations wired to the parking brake had I done this rather than just putting the brake in play... Oh well... Like I stated in the original post, I knew it had to be something simple...

So here's proof that the darned thing works...what better footage to use as a test bed than the "Chinese Bandits" scene from "Hollywood Knights"... :yesnod:  :yesnod:

Or, engage the parking after the unit is turned on. It just has to be done in that order for it to work. Anyway, "alles ist gut".
Now you can install a camera in your grill and drive that way.. :yesnod:

It can be...if you choose to install a camera...

I got a back up camera on my Excursion incorporated into the GPS. One of the better things I did to that vehicle.
