:brickwall: :brickwall: got to the show no problems. on the way home it started bucking on acceleration , then a pop out the carb then it took off like a rocket . according to the eddy cd that came with the carb it could be a lean condition. what do you guys think? it is a 1406 eddy carb do you think I should tear it down look for dirt or get a holley? I did remove the carb and turned it slightly on the side to clean the gasket off when I put the spacer between the carb and intake.

Start looking for vacuum leaks, especially around the base of the carb.

If you didn't have this problem before adding the spacer, I would agree with Big John on the vacuum leak.

Agree with Big John about the vacuum leak.

Don't like eddys but,put it back on with the spacer and get acan of carb cleaner and start the engine up and running.

Then start spraying the carb cleaner from the spacer at the intake and up till ya find the vacuum leak.

sprayed all around no vac leaks . its got to be loading up! trust me lost the hair on my arm with the fireball that pop out with the when I stabbed the throttle. next step I guess is take off the top and check for dirt and clean it. any other suggestions before I start surgery?

I went through this when I replaced my AVS,turned out it was timing not the carb,my balancer's mark could not be trusted,it was showing timing was ok. It only takes a minute to check before you start pulling the carb apart.

I searched my old thread its called 383 timing issues with me as the author its from 09 but it deals with the fireball through the carb and such. Its got a lot of good troubleshooting tips from the guys on here.

Did the engine do this when it was cold. You might have a vacum leak around the intake. My old runner had a similar issue when I would first crank it over. After allowing it to warm up it ran fine. I had to use a can of ether to find the location of the leak.

Eddy carbs are known for very very bad quality control such as dirt and shavings inside of the carb.

Just a thought and my :cents:

When its backfires through the carb, that indicates a lean condition or timing issue. I take a propane torch and open the valve a little and stick it in the throat of the carb and see if it picks up rpm. If you dont have a torch then just close the choke a little and see if it improves. Also the accelerator pump could be the problem. Check for proper pump shot. I friggin loathe Edelbrocks carbs. Its amazing to me how they took Carters reliable and excellent performing carb and make it a complete pile o poo. Get a Holley 750 double pumper and dont look back Holley list number 4779. Four corner idle as well.
