Engine in :yesnod: , engine running  , engine overheats  , engine has a cracked head :brickwall: .

I read somewhere that they made an aluminum head that looks just like the 383 stock head that is already ported. Any ideas? Need to get them on order before I leave town. Or should I get stock heads?

I'm going to post this in TECH also, so please don't mind the double post.

Thanks,
Barry

I found a place in Lancaster CA that sells a Mopar aluminum head replacement that looks just like the stock head.

The site is 440source.com Hopefully this works out. The heads are already ported and built. But I still have to check spring pressure.

Thanks for all the help.

You better check a lot more than just that on those Chinese heads.

Edelbrock in Torrance sells what you need and is made in Torrance- like it should be.

Edelbrock has poor quality too. Always take complete heads apart clean, and check the valve job and spring pressures. I have a set of 906s I will sell you cheap. They need to be rebuilt. Thats the stock head that came on your 383.

Checking parts is always reccomended, but comparing Edelbrocks to Source stuff like that? C'mon. Guys that have issues with Eddys are rare in comparison. That makes it sound like this is a coin toss...

If eddys quality control on the heads are like there carbs It is a coin toss.

I have had two of there carbs and both have dirt/shavings in them and had to be tore down.

So no more eddys carbs for me.

How can I get those heads from you? I leave early Thursday morning and I have to get them to the machine shop.

I'm still looking locally, but would rather get heads from someone well respected on the website.

We have two Mopar shops locally that might also have heads.

Though I would buy both, can I change out just the bad head and keep the other head on the engine? The head was just rebuilt 200 miles ago.

Thanks,
Barry

AZ Desert,
Barry slow down and take a deep breath lets get it right. If your going to mix and match heads which is fine if they are the same casting say 906s, take a look at the bottom side of the one you take off and the replacement and see if one or the other has been milled allot, if so change both. A small surfacing won't change much but if someone has taken say 40 thousandths off you can see the difference between the gasket surface and the depth of the casting next to it as a quick check. Also look for porting. I prefer to have a set done at the shop at the same time to match them up. Don't rush it bad things happen.

Bill is right on, I see it all the time. I have seen assembled heads from all manufacturers with metal shavings in them and very poor valve jobs. I always buy bare heads and use them as cores to do the set up right. The only company that i have seen with clean nice assembled heads is AFR. I am not willing to do a coin toss on my new motor.

There is still no comparison between E heads and Source heads. To say that any mass produced part has problems from time to time is to state the obvious. The issues with Source parts are widely known and much more frequent than anything Edelbrock has put out.

Thank you for all the sound advice. I bought a set of 452s that looks great from a Mopar shop here and he said if there any any problems, he has another pair. These only had 800 miles on them since installed after rebuild and they are clean. I'm sending them over to have them magnafluxed and rebuilt.

MoparChris had a set of 906s for me. I had a chance to call Chris and talk to him about the engine. He is not only very knowledgeable but also seems like to be a great guy and asset to our Roadrunner community.

Thanks again,
Barry
