Is one 727 trans better than another?

I have the choice between two different 727's. I will be buying one for my 383 Scamp project. Both are $150 obo and both owners say they were running when pulled. Ironically, both are from guys who demo derbied but both said neither was used - they sound honest. They were just pulled from the cars that were used (said they use 318 or 360 for derbies).

option1. 1968 727 out of an Imperial
option2. 1975 727 out of a 440 Newport

Any benefit one has over the other? I know the neutral safety switch difference, does the 75's externally balanced motor affect the trans or just the converter? I don't care about the numbers/dates. Also, they both have fluid, and say it's clean, and both were stored in doors. Anything I should check for? Of course, I would be having either one rebuilt and checked out, but I don't want to start with a burned up trans or cracked case.

Please give your feedback, thanks fellas! And no comments about being a girlymatic..... :D

Aside from being a girliematic most 727s are the same except six pack and hemi transmissions. I think some motorhomes have the big planetaries too. Pretty minor differences mostly in the forward gearset and the amount of forward clutches and the band apply lever. Almost all of these things can be added for almost no cost during rebuild and. Being a mild build arent necessary. I have put a low geared 904 behind a 383 in my old 68 Road Runner with great success. Most people give the 904s away and the adapter is like $250. Just another option. Core 727s go for less than $50 around here btw.

Wow, that's cheap. I haven't seen one at that price, and I've been looking.
One thing is, I don't want to buy one that's been laying around soaked in water.
How can you tell if it's a good core? I read that if the trans is "burned up" it can not be rebuilt?

Those two should be pretty much the same except the 75 will have the part throttle kickdown.

Some versions will have a 3 pinion planetary gear set rather then the 4 pinion. All 440 cars (at least that I ever took apart) had the 4 pinion.

Look at the fluid. Stay away from the ones with dark, burnt fluid.

Anything can be rebuilt, but I guess it depends on your version of "burned up". Like anything else, the better the core, the easier the rebuild. They slip and burn too much, then yea, somewhere along the line, the "hard parts" get damaged.

X2 on the part throttle kick down. 71 and up is the starting point for 727's but the /6 904 all had it.

You can get a PTKD kit. i would.

Get a 4.2 lever. Check the governor weight. Could wait and change it on the car if needed. That will alter the WOT shift RPM. I usually add a bolt in sprag. They are well made and the teeth bite into the case real well, on top of the bolts.

AZ Desert,
YEP. Good to see you made it back ok. The cars and coffee show kicked but this morning, lots of money in Irvine Ca. We pushed the Camaro and the Bee to the end of Chris's street before firing them up unlike me waking the neighbors up. I just made it home about an hour ago.
