Because most of the restrooms in Japan had only holes or a trough in the floor that you squatted over to take a crap...toilets are relatively new to them. I had to use one in a grocery store in Naha back in the late '70s. That was a trip... Used to sometimes see them squatting over the benjo ditches long the side of the road...
