Electric Fan Shroud question. . .

Hey guys, I attach a picture off my dual fan set up. Around town she runs under 200 so I'm happy with that. On the highway for any amount of time she'll hit 220 maybe a tad higher. The fans are each on a separate 30 amp relay. (My new 140 AMP Power Master Alternator is kicking ass by the way).

It has been suggested to me that I should take the fans/shroud out and cut several 1.5 inch holes in it so the air flows through it better at highway speeds. I believe the fans come on at 185, but they never shut off because of its running temps.

When you look at the shroud, it looks like a pretty bad set up. Seems that air is just getting trapped and not flowing through as I suspect the fans are giving too much resistance. Likely not that great for the fans either.

Any thoughts?

She is running really well now. Set the timing to 34 advance and no more run-on. So far, we're happy!!

Thanks guys,

John

At highway speeds the electric fans are most likely acting as a dam because they can't move as much air. If you cut holes in the shroud the fans won't work as well in town. If you run 220 and no higher and it cools right back down when you get of the highway I would be ok with it, 220 isn't that hot especially this time of year. If you were talking 230-235 now your getting warm. Oh the shroud isn't exactly aero dynamic towards the fans but your lacking room for that kind of thing.

I was sort of thinking that too, holes may have a negative effect. Seems to be at 220 maybe 223 or so, assuming my aftermarket gauge is correct. Thanks for your thoughts.

:yeathat: yeah on the highway you should be at 180 or even lower. that shroud is definatly blocking air. have you tried a factory direct drive or a clutch fan?

Running at 180 and lower is not recommended that's why the factory used 190 thermostats in these things.
