SEMA Action Network Opposes EPA Expansion of E15 Waiver to Model Year (MY) 2001 and Newer Cars

Several weeks ago, the SEMA Action Network (SAN) requested that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) suspend its partial waiver to permit the sale of gasoline containing 15 percent ethanol (E15) for model year 2007 and newer vehicles. Instead, the EPA has taken another step in the wrong direction by expanding the waiver to include MY 2001-2006 vehicles. The decision conflicts with President Obama’s Executive Order from earlier this week that requires government agencies to balance social and economic costs.

The EPA agrees with SAN that older cars (pre-MY 2001) should not be fueled with E15. The EPA reached its decision based over concern that ethanol’s corrosive qualities could harm the vehicle’s engine and other metal, plastic and rubber components. The EPA has proposed that a warning label be posted on the gas pump to prevent misfueling. SAN opposes this solution as incomplete given the significant threat of damage that could arise from misfueling. Even for newer vehicles, the label will cause confusion since most owner’s manuals instruct the motorist not to use ethanol blends higher than E10 and warranty coverage may be denied for damage caused by misfueling.

SAN will continue to oppose E15 until there are conclusive scientific findings that demonstrate that it will not harm automobiles of any age as a result of corrosion or other chemical incompatibilities.

Please forward this Alert to your fellow car enthusiasts. Urge them to join the SAN and help defend the hobby!

Ethanol company shares up on new EPA guidelines
Jan 21, 2011 2:21 PM ET
By The Associated Press

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Shares of several ethanol companies climbed Friday after the Environmental Protection Agency approved higher levels of corn-based ethanol to fuel all cars manufactured in the last decade.

The agency declared that 15 percent ethanol blended with gasoline is safe for cars and light-duty trucks built between 2001 and 2006. In October, the EPA approved the same gasoline-ethanol blend for vehicles manufactured since 2007.

Previously, the maximum gasoline blend has been 10 percent ethanol.

Investors immediately saw the potential for ethanol companies that are left after a harrowing three years that saw numerous bankruptcies and refineries bought for pennies on the dollar.

Falling gas prices during the recession and vaporizing investment dollars shuttered many of the companies that arrived in recent years to take advantage of federal subsidies.

Those that stuck it out were often established, with a solid financial backing.

Pacific Ethanol Inc. led the sector gains with shares rising about 6 cents, or nearly 7 percent, to about 87 cents in afternoon trading.

Shares in BioFuel Energy Corp. rose 5 cents, or 4.4 percent, to $1.18, while Rex American Resources' shares added 47 cents, or 3.1 percent, to $15.50.

Green Plains Renewable Energy's shares gained 17 cents, or 1.5 percent, to $11.68, while shares in Aventine Renewable Energy Holdings Inc. rose 50 cents, or 1.7 percent, to $29.50.

This really burns my biscuits. My sons car has been in the shop for two weeks, local mechanic couldn't fix it. Sent it to dealership. They test the fuel in it, turns out the thing is full of E85. Fuel pump needs to come out, lines and tank drained and cleansed to the tune of $300. My son only fuels up with silver or gold grade BP fuel usually. Guess the wrong fuel got put in the pump tanks, is this possible?? Grrrrrr!!!!

It could have. There have been several cases here where diesel fuel was dumped in the gas tanks by mistake.

What a mess. I'd stop by that BP station and get a sample. If it turns out the way you say, hold them accountable.

Just an update. Got the car back from the dealership, total bill there $250, plus $110 from 1st mechanic, plus $130 towing bill from house to 1st mechanic. Car runs great luckily. My son goes to the same small town station usually when he fills up and almost always uses pump 1 and the last time was no exception. I checked the pump and there isn't even the option for E85 at that pump, heck I don't think its even offered there at the station.

I'm gonna pursue it though I doubt I'll get any satisfaction.
