It does sound like a muffler falling apart but you need to crawl under there and narrow down the source :yesnod:

if you have a h pipe or an x pipe, stuff a rag in one side and see when the noise goes away.

Thanks for the replies.Turns out to be drivers side muffler thats at fault although I'm gonna replace them both as I figure the other will no doubt be on the way out too.Could have done without this,just spent £500 getting my Golf repaired :rolleyes:

It most always seems to work that way! Everything happens at once. I think you're right, might as well do both while you're under there!
