A833/Gear Set/Axles/Driveshaft

I'm going to replace what I believe to be the 42 year old 3.23 Sure Grip rear gears on my RR project. Gonna put 3.55's into the Pumpkin.

What recommendations would you make for a better set of gears able to handle a warmed up 383. I'm told I'll be in the 510 TQ area with around 485 HP. Considering that's a bit more than the factory intended the drivetrain to handle, I want to be sure I don't have to worry about busting up my 23 spline A833 (which I just spent $1,100 rebuilding) or driveshaft, axles, rear gears, etc.

Do I have cause for concern? If so, what parts/supplier would you recommend?

l've had 3.23 3.55 and 3.91s. for all around drlvabllty l think the 3.55s are best. doesn't kill the mpg and plenty peppy. and doesn't tach out on the freeway like 3.91 and up does.

When I rebuilt my 489 case at the time 3.55 were on a 6-8 month BO so I went with 3.73.

Can't tell you how they work till next spring.

Generally speaking, the higher the rear ratio numbers, the less stress on the trans. That is, the trans doesn't have to bear the brunt of all the force that is required to move the vehicle, since some of that work is absorbed/shared by the taller diff ratio. The factory stuff is pretty strong, but for extra insurance, you may want to consider upgrading the yoke, axles, and u-joints if you plan to beat on it regularly. 3:55's get my vote for all-around usage. With those torque & HP numbers though, the car would flat out scream with 4:10's! :cents:

I have a friend that bought a 383 Road Runner new, and did nothing more than add a set of Cragers, headers, & 4:30 gears...You should hear the stories of all the whoop-ass he inflicted!

I went from 3.23's to 3.91. Big difference - highway cruising is not as enjoyable as it was.......
I got my gears new through US Strange back in '95.

Well the body shop guy put her up on the lift and cleaned off the pumpkin. It's def a 3.23 in there now, I will get 3.55's. Also likely upgrade yokes, axles and u-joints. He said it's a 742 housing? Not sure what that is, but he said it's a good rear.

Moving from 3.23 to 3.55 is hardly worth mentioning. Thats a lot of work for such a small increment. Factory gears are the best quality and if they pass inspection then I would reuse the 3.23s. A yoke upgrade is very smart and then you can run the big 1350 U joint. By doing a good setup on the rear gears they will last a long time unless it sees very regular dragstrip use with sticky tires and high RPM launches.
