Got the crank, chain, cam, pistons, bearings into the 383 block. So far so good. Eddy heads are at machine shop getting ported.

George, for sure. I think in a few months I'll be ready to roll. Gonna get engine compartment painted then all electrical done so we can put motor in; hopefully in a few weeks. Then back to shop for paint, interior, etc. Lot's more to buy, but we are getting there.

Thanks guys, I can't wait. Slow, slow process. We welded one of the new torque boxes in and continue working to patch the smaller rust holes with sheet metal. It's especially slow because of all those small gremlins that pop up. But over the next couple weeks we'll be welding in the trunk floor, extensions, quarter panels, etc. Should start to see some noticable changes soon.

More pics to follow.

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone.

Hahaha, yes Daddy is.

Hey, some "mopar" guy I came across on Craig's List tells me some interesting things that he says are facts. First, that the 383, though rated at 335 HP, was really 365 and that the Hemi rated at 425 was really 617 HP. Don't know. Also he said you're lucky to get 400 HP out of a 383; which flat out isn't true. Also, something that bothered me a bit. I told my engine builder I wanted 10:1 CR. He keeps assuring me that it is and that he got 10:1 pistons. How can I really tell? The "mopar" guy said to get 10:1 pistons you need to special order them. Can you tell from the piston tops in the pics above?

Most of these so-called self-styled "Mopar experts" don't know a lot. Roger Huntington did a lot of checking back in the day on automotive engine output. His conclusion on the 383 was that it was spot on at 335 hp. Mopar Muscle did a build on a 383 a few years ago and they pretty much confirmed the 335 hp rating but were a little down on the torque output (they got 390 lb-ft compared to the stock 425 rating). The Hemi might have gotten 500 hp in stock form with a good, sharp tune but nowhere near 617.
Just getting "10:1" pistons and slapping them in the bores won't cut it. Your builder will need to do some math in order to verify the CR. How far down are the pistons in the bore, how thick the head gasket is, what is the combustion chanber volume in cc's etc. If he knows his stuff you'll be ok. Ask him to show you the math he has done to arrive at his 10:1 CR calculation. If he is a sharp guy he'll have no problem in walking you through it. If he balks or gets upset about this request he may not have done the work he should have to verify the CR.

Great John, thanks. I'll ask him. I know we got the Eddy aluminum RPM's with the smaller cc chamber. Thanks again. I think I'm getting addicted to Mopar. LOL.

Happy Thanksgiving.

If your running a stock size chamber and fel pro off the shelf gaskets, you will need a zero deck clearance on the pistons with no more than a 5 cc valve reliefs. Most pistons are going to have 5cc or less for valve reliefs. Zero deck means that the top of the piston is flush with the deck (the surface that the head sits on). If the piston is zero deck then it will be 9.0 or more. The short stroke of the 383 will make a difference on C.R. For instance a true zero deck piston with 5 cc valve reliefs and a fel pro .043 gasket and a Edelbrock cylinder head will go like this.
head gasket thickness
Chamber size C.R. @ .043 C.R. @ .021
75cc 9.78 10.35
84cc 8.99 9.45
88cc 8.68 9.11

As you can see you can run a thin MLS gasket and boost your compression. I dont remember what head you bought but if you haven't bought one yet go with the 75 cc version and verify it when you get them by cc them. I would mill them if they dont measure up.
