Nothing wrong with the 383. It was the Chrysler workhorse engine with over 3 million produced. The 383 carried the Chrysler performance banner on the street for many a year and pounded on many bowtie and blue oval branded machines. When I bought my '71 Charger SE back in '94 it had a 383 but I...
Is it A/C equipped? If so, the engine will be turquoise as you have stated. All A/C equipped cars (according to sources) had turquoise engines that were rated at 330 horepower (4 bbl Sport Satellite engine). Non-A/C cars with 383's were rated at 335 hp and were painted orange.
The fuel pump pushrod is a known problem. Some of them are soft and they get worn down by about 1/4". Mine did. Pull the fuel pump and see if you can get the pushrod out. If you are lucky it will fall out. If not you are going to have to work it out of there and may need to pull the intake...

I can confirm this as Jack Smith (father of the road runner) related the story at the '05 Mopar Nats. One of the dealers being shown the cars was from New Mexico whose state bird is the road runner. He loved it! The decals were put on the cars with rubber cement clandestinely while the dealers...
